Frankenstein’s Wedding… Live in Leeds

Published on November 23, 2010 in Blog

Last night was the press launch of the BBC’s ‘Frankenstein’s Wedding… Live in Leeds’, a dance and drama event being screened on BBC Three in March. I was rather surprisingly contacted to attend. This was the first press engagement I have been invited to as a result of writing this blog. Partly out of curiosity and partly due to the high probability of free snacks

Now is a great time to check out Jupiter

Published on November 7, 2010 in Blog

On 20th September Jupiter was the closest it has been to Earth since 1951. For the next 3 months it is still very close and one of the brightest stars in the sky. At its closest it was a mere 368 million miles away – when it reached opposition (the term for when the sun, Earth, and a given planet are lined up in a

Published on November 5, 2010 in Blog

The Bank of England yesterday announced that interest rates would remain at their record low level of 0.5% for the 20th month in a row. This decision has been welcomed by many economists, not to mention people with mortgages to pay. Tweet

Published on October 19, 2010 in Blog

As an NHS employee who in March will be made redundant due to the Government’s austerity measures, I especially hope that the reform in the public sector will ultimately be beneficial to tax payers and patients. Tweet

Dark days for cricket

Published on September 21, 2010 in Blog

After the spot-fixing controversy that surrounded this summer’s 4th test match at Lord’s, the shine was definitely taken off the one day series against Pakistan. But my trip to the Oval proved to be highly enjoyable due to the close and entertaining match. But sadly, further accusations have resulted in the series descending into wild counter claims, player confrontations and events on the pitch hardly

Published on July 28, 2010 in Blog

For the last 26 months I have endured the Samsung SCH-F480 ‘Tocco‘. The simple act of looking up a contact or sending a text message often resulted a mist of rage descending and suicide seeming like a viable option. Thankfully, the daddy of all upgrades has arrived. The iPhone 4 32GB. Tweet

Are cheap scooters a green and thrifty way to travel, or an environmental liability?

Published on July 8, 2010 in Blog

After seeing Italians zipping around Rome on scooters when we visited last year, my girlfriend and I decided to go halves on some two-wheeled transport. It seemed like a fun, green and thrifty way to get around. But do mass produced cheap goods benefit the world, or is modern manufacturing an environmental liability symptomatic of an increasingly disposable society? Tweet

The barbecue to end all barbecues

Published on July 1, 2010 in Blog

Barbeque Addicts perhaps unsurprisingly is stateside in origin. The apex of their blog, the holiest of holies, is the bacon explosion. Inter-woven layers of bacon with a layer of Italian sausage meat wrapped around fried bacon, marinated in bbq sauce and grilled.  Tweet

The move to a self hosted WordPress site

Published on June 29, 2010 in Blog

Larkhill Talk has moved house. Its previous home (WordPress.com) was very easy to set up and maintain, but it was very limited. It was the equivalent of living in a neat and tidy bedsit; easy to move in and simple to take care of. Now it has moved up the property ladder and is powered by a self hosted installation of WordPress.org. Moving has given

Published on June 25, 2010 in Blog

Despite years of disappointment and frustration, hopes were once again high for England this world cup. England looked good in the qualifying campaign, resulting in the 4 year cycle of blind hope and media hype. But then reality came crashing back down. Tweet
